Now You Know – Delaying The Inevitable

Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, and shares the thoughts on the state of the network from the director of operations, Ryan Costello.

Last week, we scheduled an entire episode around Perram’s farewell appearance on the Know Direction podcast, staff who wouldn’t be appearing on the episode shared their thoughts, and a lot of us steeled our emotions for the official good-bye.

Then a storm flew through my area. It only lasted a few minutes, but managed to flood my daughter’s school yard, knock down a branch in our front yard that we hung out swing on every summer, and knock out electricity in my area for an indeterminate amount of time.

Hydro-Quebec posted an estimate for when we could expect our power back. Annoyingly -almost mockingly- it was the minute we were supposed to log on for tech and preshow prep.

But with no indication that we could trust this estimate, I was in contact with Vee about the status of my power. After 8:30pm Eastern, Hydro-Quebec still said the situation was under analysis, and the estimate hadn’t updated. I was torn about asking them to postpone the show for me, because of the time and emotional investment the cast, our listeners, and Perram put into the episode. Ends up, I didn’t have to ask. Vee, Luis, and Perram decided amongst themselves it wouldn’t be the show it needed to be without me. They went live for a brief explanation, and officially announced that everyone would have to wait until the 23rd for the episode.

Speaking of network content, here’s a recap of the Know Direction Network content that came from last week:

Eldritch Excursion – Out to Lunch
By Nate Wright

According to Pathfinder 1e, Ghoran are delicious. That’s not just lore, that’s the rule. This was toned down in Starfinder and 2e, so Nate tuned it back up!

I especially appreciate this because my first exposure to gnomes -The Taking Of Mount Nevermind in Dragon Magazine 229- explained that gnomes are unpalatable. The rules didn’t support it, but from then on, I had monsters avoid biting and swallowing gnomes because of how foul they taste. Poor Ghoran have the situations reversed.

Game Design Unboxed 37: The Night Cage

My favourite part of Danielle’s conversation with Christopher Ryan Chan is when he explains that it took a few months to make Night Cage good, but years to make it something special. I also liked his stories of taking some advice but sticking to his vision when he didn’t think the feedback applied.

Digital Divination 057 – Spelljammer and Starfinder

I’m going to disagree with John and Ron about the topic of this episode. Although it talks about Spelljammer, it’s larger topic is the shift in popular science fiction that’s influencing the tone and direction of sci-fi TTRPGs.

Preview of May 23rd to May 27th

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design.
