Wrangler (Mounted Gunslinger Archetype)

In Private Sanctuary 243, I lamented the lack of a gunslinger archetype that grants the class a mount for maximum cowboy imagery. Mounts may cause adventurers some issues (which is why hosteling armour exists), but the image of a gunslinger riding on horseback is so iconic, Lirianne, the iconic gunslinger, is even pictured riding a horse in Player Companion: Animal Archive. And yet, no mounted gunslinger. Well, no longer!

Wrangler

Riders of the roughest terrain, wranglers evolved from ranchers who used firearms, lassos, and riding tricks to manage their cattle herds. These skills proved handy when monsters came looking for fresh beef and the wranglers had to defend the herd. Eventually, these skills lead many on the path to adventure .

Weapon Proficiency: Instead of proficiency with all firearms, a wrangler only gains proficiency with one-handed firearms. Additionally, a wrangler is proficient with the lasso.

Gunsmith: A wrangler must take a pistol when she chooses a battered firearm at 1st level.
This ability works in all other ways like the gunslinger’s gunsmith class feature.

Mount: A wrangler is most comfortable riding a trusted mount into battle. At 1st level, a wrangler gains the service of a mount, as a cavalier, using her gunslinger level as her effective cavalier level.

Rider’s Grit (Ex): This ability works in all ways like the gunslinger’s grit ability, except she only regains grit when mounted, or if she was last riding her mount within a number of rounds equal to half her gunslinger level (minimum 1).

Deeds: A wrangler swaps three of the normal gunslinger deeds for the following deeds:

Saddle Born (Ex): A wrangler travels in a saddle, fights from a saddle, and sleeps in her saddle. She gains a bonus to Ride checks equal to half her gunslinger level (minimum 1). The wrangler must have at least 1 grit point to perform this deed. This deed replaces the gunslinger’s dodge deed.

Herding Rope (Ex): At 3rd level, a wrangler can use a lasso to perform disarm, grapple, steal, and trip combat maneuvers. Performing this deed costs 1 grit point. This deed replaces the pistol whip deed.

Round-Up (Ex): At 7th level, as a full-round action while mounted, a wrangler can move up to her mounts around a number of targets equal to her Wisdom modifier. The wrangler must travel completely around all her targets and end her move in or adjacent to the space she began her turn. The targets of her round-up are considered flat-footed until the end of the wrangler’s next turn, and the wrangler gains concealment for a number of rounds equal to her Wisdom modifer. Performing this deed costs 1 grit point. This deed replaces the dead shot deed.

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design.
