Now You Know – Our Blogs

Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, as the director of operations, Ryan Costello, shares his thoughts on the state of the network.

I broke poor Rob‘s heart last week when I didn’t mention the blogs in my Network Update about our new content schedule. My intent was to follow-up last week’s post about our podcasts with a post about our blogs. That said, I have to admit that I’ve been so focused on getting our podcast ship back in order, I’ve neglected our blogs. When we get to the network update, you’ll see how few regular blogs we’re publishing at the moment. Which is a shame, because they played as big a role in the early days of the site as the podcast.

At the dawn of the site, it featured one podcast, a variety of written reviews of 3.5 D&D hardcovers, and the occasional new D&D 3.5 design. This wasn’t formally a blog, but the site did have written content since launch.

At the time, I wrote all of the articles on the site. If anyone else had asked, I’m sure I would have brought them on board, of course. But I didn’t mind. I enjoyed it.  Really, the site gave me an opportunity to work on my writing and design, and the message board served as a supportive but honest sounding board.

Over time, as we added more podcast content, I ran out of books to cover, and the focus of the site shifted to Pathfinder, the blog went away. They came back in a big way with Alex‘s Iconic Design. Originally hosted on its own site, after I shouted out to it multiple times on the podcast, we discussed bringing it over to the Know Direction site. It opened my eyes to a fact that drove Know Direction’s growth going forward: There was value in associating with us. This wasn’t the dreaded work-for-exposure exchange. This was exposure-for-exposure. The site got more content, the writer’s got a bigger platform, and we grew as a team.

When the podcast hiatuses started, we still had a healthy amount of blog content, almost daily. But Dustin getting hired by Paizo, Luis scaling back his contributions to the site, and life forcing Alex, Loren, and Nate to do the same, it left only myself and Rob regularly blogging.

Now that the flagship is back in the waters, and our podcast offerings are healthy again, maybe it’s time to reinforce our blog offerings. If you’re interested in contributing a blog to Know Direction, reach out to knowdirection@hotmail.com, we’ll start a conversation.

Ryan Costello

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
