Now You Know – Sticking The 2022 Landing

Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, as the director of operations, Ryan Costello, shares his thoughts on the state of the network.

Two weeks ago, I laid out three Network goals I wanted to accomplish before the end of the year, all podcast releases. I managed to achieve all three:

  • For now, the last episode of Adventurous: Scheduling Adventurous recordings hit the “victim of our own success” issues the network faced as a whole last year. More than ever, we’re busy pursuing the awesome opportunities the network (among other factors) helped us earn. So we’re looking at recording Adventurous Specials going forward. They won’t be on a regular schedule, just whenever the cast can find a weekend to get a game in. If that doesn’t work out, I hope we can at least record a finale. I love this cast and these characters too much to let them fade away unceremoniously.
  • The 2022 Holiday Special: Again with the scheduling issues, I worried we wouldn’t get a Holiday Special out this year. Luckily, after a week with only the Luis segment recorded, other members of the staff made themselves available, and we ended up with a solid episode. What it lacked in quantity of staff, we made up with quality of conversation. We didn’t need to cram 20 conversations into 10 minute segments to get two hours of content. On Discord, longtime listener Majuba said “It felt a lot more natural” compared to past years. I have to agree.
  • The Dwarfed Special Edition: One of these things is not like the other. Dwarfed is an oddity when it comes to Network content, an original audio play I wrote before Know Direction or 3.5 Private Sanctuary were ever on my radar. After I got into podcasting, I found myself with quality recording equipment, a finished script gathering dust, and talented friends. So over a few weekends, I had my friends record the dialogue. Then, over the next few years, I recorded the narration and edited the episodes together. Revisiting this artifact of the network’s past made me happier than I expected.

As for the future, we decided to lift the veil quite high during the Holiday Special when it came to upcoming content. Expect to hear more about 2023 plans in the coming weeks.

Speaking of content, here’s a recap of the Know Direction Network podcasts and articles that released last week:

Intrepid Heroes 102 – Looking Forward

Two out of the last three episodes of Intrepid Heroes have been asides from the adventure, but I’m here for it. This felt like an original Digital Divination reunion, and different enough from episode 100 to stand on its own. Now, if by episode 105 we’ve had two more retrospectives, I might poke John to get back to the adventure.

Game Design Unboxed 53 – Gotham City Under Siege

If you ever gave up on an idea for a game that needed an expensive licensed property, you need to listen to how Batman: The Animated Series – Gotham City Under Siege came to be. Michael Guigliano makes it sound easy!

Digital Divination 073 – Favorite Starfinder Magic Items

Magic items fill a more niche space in Starfinder than most RPGs, so it was fun to hear John and Jason talk about some of their favourite items (their five favourite, in fact) and how they’ve interacted with them in game and at the word processor.

This holiday, I speak with Luis Loza, Jason Keeley, Loren Sieg, John Godek, and Nate Wright about the past, the present, and the future, like some kind of reverse Dickensian spirit.

Dwarfed Special Edition

Listen to the original story of Markle, the dwarf cursed with no hair, as he fulfills someone else’s heroic destiny. Also, enjoy the slight changes in microphone settings and background noise, as I recorded the narration in three different locations with a degrading microphone over three years.

Preview of January 2nd to January 6th

This is back to Block 2 of our 2-block schedule.

I set out three podcast editing goals for the end of the year, and I basically made them! January 1st 2023 still counts as the end of last year, right?

Presenting: Mikhail Rekun

Mikhail Rekun’s worked on the majority of Pathfinder 2e sourcebooks, both for the RPG and Lost Omens lines, including the upcoming Highhelm.

Hmm… Block 2 is looking pretty sparse, especially this week (Rob’s already excused himself from this week’s Investing In). Gonna need some new content soon.

Now you know,
Ryan Costello

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
