Know Direction Pathfinder Podcast

Know Direction 150 – Sphere in Review

Last year, we had a number of third party publishers on the show to tell us about their companies and products. One of those companies was Drop Dead Studios. Listener Sean Izaakse wanted to know more about Drop Dead’s flagship product, but it’s a 230-page beast of a book. Perram decided the only way to do this book justice was to give it the same treatment we usually reserve for a Paizo hardcover. Now here we are, giving an in depth review of Spheres of Power. And just like when we review a Paizo hardcover, we invited the network to join us. Tonight, that call was answered by Alex Augunas.

Before Perram joined Know Direction as the show’s first full time co-host, the podcast could have best been describe as a bunch of Pathfinder RPG stuff. Perram brings a knowledge of and love for Golarion to Know Direction, something any Pathfinder podcast is lacking without. On top of being a man on the pulse of the Pathfinder campaign setting, Perram is the founder of the superlative site for Pathfinder spellcasters, Perram’s Spellbook, a free web application that creates customized spell cards.

Yeah, not going to argue that there aren’t some wording and balance issues, though I will note that for Alex’s choice, applying that trait via shapeshift to an unwilling target requires the expenditure of an additional spell point and they get a Fortitude save to avoid it, meaning that using Animal Mind offensively costs at least one spell point and the target gets two saves (Fort and Will) against it…and that’s only concentration. So you can’t really spam that one. I definitely agree the loss of extraordinary abilities is weird and doesn’t make much sense, though.

In regards to other third party products, I’d be interested in seeing you guys tackle Akashic Mysteries sometime, or perhaps Strange Magic. I’d add in Grimoire of Lost Souls, but Alex’s involvement probably makes that a no-go…

That was a great episode, I really enjoyed it. I backed the kickstarted, but I haven’t gotten around to actually reading it. When I do, now I know what I am getting into. Also Perram, you really need to do the how to play a spell caster episode (or blog) that would be really interesting. If you do more 3rd party product reviews, I would personally be interested in Deep Magic or Thunderscape: The World of Aden and not because I backed those kickstarters and haven’t had time to read the books… although older, the Tome of Horrors Complete would also be interesting. Thanks again!

I would like to vote that the off hand comment for Perram to do a podcast on how to play a caster actually take place. Like Ryan, I too suffer from an inability to play a caster well. I would love to hear anything and everything on how to play a caster better for one who clearly knows more – a lot more. Thanks, guys!

Hey guys, enjoyed the episode which I finished today. Your kickstarter mention of the magnetic DM screen had me take a look. But when I did, I found the OTHER one which you didn’t mention. Took me awhile to realize that!

Anyway, there is another magnetic, modular DM screen kickstarter out there. Very comparable to the one from Wyrmwood in terms of items you get, but this one offers a pine option (read: cheaper options). It is Dice Base: Master magnetic game screen and closes within a week, much sooner than the wyrmwood one. I’ll be backing this one instead of Wyrmwood for the simple reason that it’s a single guy and i want to support him…
