Now You Know: Where To Find Us

The greatest loss of the post-website age of the Internet is the landing page.

It used to be that if you wanted to know more about a brand or company, you went to their website. There was all the latest news, company information, a message board or chat room, and maybe even a simple but potentially addictive game.

Now, all of that is scattered. If you want news, figure out which social media platform they favour and check back often, because subscribing is a crapshoot. For information, you better hope the brand has a wiki. Message board or chat room are now Discord servers, which are really hit or miss. Some are active communities that connect fans to creators or at least people acting in official capacity on behalf of the brand. Others are ghost towns. And games? They don’t even have Facebook games anymore.

Now that Old Man Internet is done with his rant, lets talk about where you can find what Know Direction content. I’ve put more work into the Network over the last month than I have in a long time, and I don’t want to be the only person getting the full Know Direction experience.

Website

You are here.

I still consider the website the home of the Know Direction Network. It’s where you find the majority of our content, and its where our content goes up either first or simultaneous with our other platforms.

The majority but not all of it. And a lower percentage lately than before.

You know what to expect to find here, but for completionism’s sake:

Podcasts

  • Digital Divination: John, Ron, and Jason’s Starfinder talk show.

  • Game Design Unboxed: Danielle’s board game design interview show.
  • Intrepid Heroes: A Starfinder 2e actual play.

  • Know Direction: Our flagship Pathfinder news, reviews, and interviews podcast.

  • Know Direction Beyond: Alex and James’ Starfinder news, reviews, and interviews podcast.

  • Upshift: My Essence20 talk show.

Blogs

  • Essential Builds: I turn pop culture characters into Essence20 player characters.
  • Guidance: Alex’s GM advice column.

  • Investing In: Rob’s all purpose (but Pathfinder-heavy) RPG essays .

  • Now You Know: My weekly editorials.

YouTube

We’ve had a YouTube channel for longer than any platform other than our website. Before Twitch, we streamed to YouTube.

The only thing we’re streaming now is Know Direction: Beyond, which then syndicates to YouTube, along with our new model for Know Direction Prime: Three short videos later compiled and released as a longer episode on YouTube and to our RSS feed.

I still don’t think of us as a YouTube channel, but rather a podcast with a YouTube channel. Still, by putting a little more effort into the presentation of our videos, we can reach a whole other audience and serve our existing audience in different ways.

Patreon

Ah Patreon.

The picture they chose to preview the latest content (despite being pretty sure that’s *not* the frame I chose) sums up the contentious relationship I have with the platform.

Unlike YouTube, where some version of anything that shows up there makes its way to the site, I do post content made exclusively for our Patreon:

  • 3,5 Private Sanctuary Archive: We’re constantly pushing Know Direction’s servers to their limits. A few years ago, I made the tough call to remove all of the Private Sanctuary episodes from the site to make room. I figured the content was out of date and out of audience. To my surprise, almost immediately I received a message asking where they went. So I worked out a plan to post the episodes to Patreon as free member content. I don’t just post them, however. I listen to them first, and then write an editorial.
  • BTS: My last two solo segments of Know Direction took two takes each, with a day in between. So I posted them to the Patreon. If you’re curious about other behind the scenes content, this will go up as it happens.

Discord and Social Media

I wasn’t sure how to break these up. I don’t make content on Discord, but I am always available for a chat. Conversely, I do create the odd original meme and share links most days to our Facebook, Bluesky, and Mastodon pages, but I do it as the page. I never know how much of my own personality to use in my replies. Either way, they’re a great way to get in touch with me and keep track of the Know Direction Network content.

Speaking of which, here’s the Know Direction Network content from the last week:

Essential Builds: Ryu
By Ryan Costello

Last week’s Upshift reminded me that I never built Ryu, a rare character who officially crossed over with Power Rangers, G.I. JOE, and Transformers.

Now you know,
Ryan Costello

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
