Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, and shares the thoughts on the state of the network from the director of operations, Ryan Costello.
I mentioned this in a post to Patreon, but we had a couple of live event cancelations last week. Although they were for specific reasons, this is consistent with a September slump we usually see this time of year. Normally we replace the early September content with a Guest Blogger Takeover to give the staff a break. This year, we’ll be going on hiatus to update the website, schedule, and address staff needs. We’ll go into greater detail next week, and on tonight’s live episode of Know Direction, how this affects the network content.
Speaking of Know Direction Network Content, here’s a recap of the Know Direction Network content from last week:

As I will expand on later, this episode inspired a Behind The Screens topic. It’s one of my favourite episodes of GDU, and a great episode to check out if you only listen periodically. The way Hellboy: The Board Game co-designers James Hewitt and Sophie Williams talked about working story structure into their board game reminded me that the games have dramatic arcs build into them. As GMs, we shouldn’t aim to create story divorced from the system but a marriage of system and story.
Thursday, September 8th
There’s a game’s character creation rules, and then there’s an individual’s character creation process. John and Jason went over their own processes, including the order they decide on details and the tools they use, followed by an extended discussion about where they get their character names.

How do you adapt a property you know nothing about? What about what you know too much about? And what’s this about Transformers not transforming? Jason and I look at the advantages and oddities of adapting a property.
