Now You Know – Missing The Host Chair

Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, and shares the thoughts on the state of the network from the director of operations, Ryan Costello.

Guest co-hosting the latest episode of Know Direction, it sank in how little I’m podcasting at the moment. At the height of my podcasting, when 3.5 Private Sanctuary released weekly and Know Direction monthly, I hosted on average 1.25 podcasts a week. Geek Together was weekly too, and Know Direction every two weeks, so that’s 1.5 podcasts a week.

Currently, I’m effectively hosting 0 podcasts. Which is so weird to me.

Upshift is on hiatus. I had one good episode without Perram, and one episode that was going so poorly that I didn’t even finish it. I apologized to the live audience and went back to the drawing board. I want to get back to it, but Perram heavily influenced the format, and so it’s a podcast without a solid identity. I’m looking for a new format and co-host.

Until then, I’m technically not hosting a podcast. Which is as weird as it is unintentional. It’s nice that I have more time to work on my freelancing, sure. But 15 years of podcasting morphed my brain. When I have a thought, I typically massage it into podcast content and then file it under “to be discussed on a podcast”. If I don’t get myself a new venue for those files, that folder’s going to overflow.

Speaking of network content, here’s a recap of the Know Direction Network content from last week:

Game Design Unboxed 39: Cheer Up

Maybe it’s because of Crystal Frasier’s original graphic novel of the same name, but I thought Chris Rio’s Cheer Up would be a game about cheerleaders. Instead, it’s a creative wordplay party game with a positive vibe.

Know Direction 278 – Knights of Lastwall Breakdown

I was a bit worried this might overlap with last month’s Knights of Lastwall preview, but between the different hosts and my insight into the areas I worked on, this felt like a very different episode. And I had a lot of fun with it.

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
