Recall Knowledge – Path Finding: The Next Generation

Every week, Recall Knowledge recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, a preview of the Know Direction content of the week to come, and the director of operations, Ryan Costello, thoughts on the state of the network.

I’m back from a week of vacation time with the family. We didn’t go on any big trips, and were never more than an hour or so away from home, but we got in a lot of nice family bonding. The week started with Abigail’s birthday party and ending with playing Scarlett’s first game of Pathfinder.

The M&M blanket is fog of war

Technically Abby participated as well, but that was more because she likes to be involved in everything her big sister tries.

I’ll go into more detail about teaching an emerging reading how to roleplay in an upcoming Behind The Screens. For now, I can say that the experience was a success in the ways I hoped it would be. Scarlett let her imagination run wild, loved having input into the characters she was playing, and was broadly learning the mechanics of playing out a turn.

Between character creation, explaining the world and the rules, and playing a round of combat, we spent about an hour on the session. After that, she asked if we could continue later. That could have been her way of backing out of the game, but she’s brought up playing again twice since then, including asking if she could rename her dragon. I think that level of engagement away from the table is a good sign.

I recorded the session, and am considering releasing it as content.

Speaking of network content, here’s a recap of what you might have missed last week from the Know Direction Network:

Monstrous Physique Presents: Summoned Monsters, Vol. 3 (PF2E)
By Luis Loza

Hey, I’m in this one!

Luis sent that bloody and ashen warrior to designer Rigby Bendele, freelancer Ruvaid Virk, and myself, and challenged us to come up with a creature based on that art that isn’t evil. That restriction ended up being a driving force behind a lot of my design decisions, and it shows how one tweak can force inspiration in new directions.

Ryan Costello

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
