Recall Knowledge – November 16th to November 27th

Every week, Recall Knowledge recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, a preview of the Know Direction content of the week to come, and the director of operations, Ryan Costello, thoughts on the state of the network.

A couple of weeks ago, we teamed up with Beadle & Grimm’s to giveaway t-shirts from their merch catalog to help promote their Beadle & Grimm’s Complete Character Chronicles crowdfunding campaign currently on Kickstarter. The contest ended last Thursday, and today we are prepared to announce the winners:

Jim Barnes

Tom Henderson Jr

Lazaro Mares

Lucas Servideo

Jay Zicht

Thanks to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the winners! I’ll be in touch with instructions for how to claim your prize.

Speaking of- Wait. I wasn’t speaking of Know Direction network content. But I always speak of Know Direction network content before transitioning…

Speaking of Know Direction network content, here’s a recap of what you might have missed last week from the Know Direction Network:

Adventurous 048 – More Spider Than Most Spider Men

This Adventurous featured what was probably the most complex encounter we’ve seen in War for the Crown. Moving parts, traps, swarms, illusions, spiders. For everything that was going on, the encounter was smooth as spider silk.

Recall Knowledge – November 9th to November 21st

You know that Adventurous I just talked about? In last week’s Recall Knowledge I explained how I stayed up all night editing it before realizing I was a week off and didn’t need one until today. In case you were wondering where today’s Adventurous is.

Digital Divination 017 – Disease and Poison

John and Ron have an honest chat about the deadliness and repetitiveness of Starfinder’s streamlined version of the disease and poison rules. The shift from the normally super positive Digital Divination adds variety to the show’s tone. Despite not loving those rules, it is still an informative and valuable conversation for Starfinder players and GMs.

Burst of Insight— More Wastelands Rebooted, part four
By Andrew Marlowe

Oh! I can talk about this one!

I haven’t had a chance to elaborate on most of Andrew Marlowe’s Wastelands series because of my lack of familiarity with Fallout. But more than most installments in the series, this topic contained a lot of universal advice. Andrew talks about formatting sessions like episodes. On top of making sure every session is about something, it helps break down multiple sessions succinctly. Great advice.

Know Direction 237 Live! Converting Adventures to Pathfinder 2e

We had Find The Path’s Rick Sandidge and Ross Scoggin on to talk about converting adventures to 2e. Then Perram and I unboxed a couple of recent arrivals: the 2e Beginner’s Box for me, and the Bestiary 2 Battle Cards for him.

Phantasmal Killer—Kindergarten Heroes
By Ryan Costello

I wrote this filler article for Crystal months ago. You know what the issue with writing a filler article in case we ever need it? When we don’t need it for months and I have to wait for feedback on some writing I’m excited to share.

It’s not a groundbreaking article, but I think it serves as an important reminder that the GM may feel like the leader of the group, but everyone is responsible for making sessions happen.

Know Direction 237 – Converting Adventures to Pathfinder 2e

It was a last minute decision to switch Rick and Ross’ big announcement -that they would be launching a new actual play, featuring Hell’s Rebels converted to 2e- from the jumping off point to the jumping on point. I think the episode benefited from it greatly, as it contextualized a lot of the conversation and helped characterize Rick and Ross.

Something Creates – Quest #5
By Andrew Sturtevant

Here it is, Quest #5 of 5! Andrew set out to write an entire quest line, releasing more words than a typical Starfinder Society scenario, plus designer notes, all for free for the Know Direction audience. It was a huge undertaking, and Andrew deserves to be acknowledged for what he pulled off.

Intrepid Heroes 048 – Another Dimension?

Honestly, when last episode ended without resolving the starship combat they were in, I was worried this entire episode would be dedicated to that same starship combat. Fortunately, the starship combt wraps fairly early in the episode, and things immediately go in a strange new direction.

Bend the Knee – Setting Expectations Heightened +1
By Loren Sieg

A few weeks ago, Loren created a prompt about four fickle players who each absolutely wanted one particular element for their next campaign. Loren put her panelists in the position of crafting that campaign, composed of random elements.

We had a ton of fun the first time, and since so many of the prompts went unused, Loren decided to do it again! This time, the role of GM meeting their players particular demands went to Charlotte Irrgang of Irrgardless design studio, freelancer and Valiant cast member Jessica Redekop, and listener Shane “ragnarocknrolla” Ferguson.

Game Design Unboxed 002: Tiny Towns with Peter McPherson

Tiny Towns and Expancity may have a few thematic connections, but the journeys the two games took to publication, and the designers who conceived of them, are very different.

Now you know,
Ryan Costello

Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
