Know Direction 117 – Occult Mega Review
I could not agree less with Alex’s hyperbole about Mesmerist Tricks. They are not super hard to find uses for, especially because about half are not reactionary. Find me a rouge who would have trouble finding a good use for free flanking over the course of a day, or a tank who won’t like an ability to force creature to focus on them instead of allies. These are situations you can engineer. Even the reactionary tricks are super easy to trigger. How often to you realistically have a day of adventuring and never get attacked? These are no more requiring crazy foresight to pull off than being a prepared caster. You take the general ones you can count on using, and if you have more insight into what you are likely to come up against, you can game it even more.
All that said, I do love the idea of the mesmerist keeping their tricks recorded, but in the dark. Like secrets in Hearthstone, an opponent or GM knows there is something there, but can’t try to perfectly play around it. It also make for a dramatic, AH-HA moment as you swoop in to help another character on their turn.
