Now You Know – December 2022

Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, and shares the thoughts on the state of the network from the director of operations, Ryan Costello.

I’m somewhere between “It’s December already?” and “It’s only December 5th?” Because I’ve been freelancing pretty much nonstop assignments since I started work on the G.I. Joe RPG CRB in 2020. Two years of deadlines have warped my perception of time. But with one project turned over today, and only a promise of the next one in writing, I have a little more flexibility with my free time for the first time in a long time. Weird to think of the holiday season as a less busy time of year, but here we are.

Although the Know Direction podcast has been on hiatus for a few months now, you can expect one more episode from the flagship before the end of the year: The traditional holiday special. In the past, we’ve taken this opportunity to catch up with staff, crossover casts from different podcasts, and use the episode as an excuse to enjoy each other’s company. We’re discussing whether to try a live recording again this year, or go back to the classic 2015 Holiday Special with a prerecorded episode. If you have any preference for the Holiday Special format, let us know in the usual social media places.

Speaking of Know Direction Network Content, here’s a recap of the Know Direction Network podcasts and articles from last week:

Digital Divination 071 – Top 5 Playable Species in Starfinder

Last time, I defended John and Jason’s decision to move to top 5 lists, even if the format has a bad reputation. Well, I’m doubling down! Not only do these Top 5 lists highlight how well John, a 5-Nova GM, and Jason, a former longtime developer on Starfinder, know the system and setting, but the anecdotes take the conversations in fun and fascinating directions.

Upshift 007 – Plotting Story Arcs

A peak behind the scenes, I remember thinking this episode was a trainwreck after we finished recording. When I sat down to edit, I thought I might need to rerecord whole chunks to salvage the conversation, something I’ve only done a couple of times in the last 15 of editing podcasts. But as I listened back, it was fine? Pretty good even? I get a little tongue tied toward the end of the episode, and I guess I let a bad last impression convince me I’d screwed up the whole episode.

    Now you know,
    Ryan Costello

    Ryan Costello

What started as one gamer wanting to talk about his love of a game grew into a podcast network. Ryan founded what would become the Know Direction Podcast network with Jason "Jay" Dubsky, his friend and fellow 3.5 enthusiast. They and their game group moved on to Pathfinder, and the Know Direction podcast network was born. Now married and a father, Ryan continues to serve the network as the director of logistics and co-host of Upshift podcast, dedicated to the Essence20 RPG system he writes for and helped design. You can find out more about Ryan and the history of the network in this episode of Presenting: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2021/01/presenting-ryan-costello/
