April 1st, 2025 – Polyhedrons the world over thought it would be fun to prank their gaming groups with a full day of rolling only 1s. As the missed attacks and failed saving throws piled up, the severe consequences of so many critical failures became clear.
“We had to look up the rules for a seven way tied Initiative,” said Vivian Massop, a flabbergasted Game Master from Maine. She then screamed, “It called for a roll off!”
“I had them check to jump over a 5-foot puddle, y’know, as a warm up roll,” celebrity GM Brandon Lee Mulligan said through tears. “I didn’t know so little water could claim so many lives.”
The Orc Butts actual play podcast group was hit particularly hard. They had invested in matching sets of dice that replaced the 1s with the podcast’s catchphrase Get Cheeky. “Get Cheeky has lost all meaning…” Party Ranger said.
“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd ed player Aaron Zanin scoffed. “Sure, my attack rolls were in the garbage, but I’ve never passed more ability score checks!”
The casualties could have been much higher. Fortunately, 95% of scheduled games for the 1st never happened. “I hate to do this,” thousands of gamers said before explaining that something came up at the last minute, or that this week has been tough and they’re tired.
For the few tables that did see play, many dice who took the prank too far are learning their lesson the hard way.
“It was just a joke…” a Norse Foundry Shadow Knight d20 was heard mumbling as it rocked back and forth in dice jail.
