Every week, Now You Know recaps the Know Direction content of the past week, previews the Know Direction content of the week to come, as the director of operations, Ryan Costello, shares his thoughts on the state of the network.
For a long time now, podcatchers and the Know Direction RSS feeds haven’t been getting along. We’ve tried different tricks, and sometimes they work. We’ve also left it along and sometimes it works. I know personally, our feed doesn’t refresh when I’m on my Wi-Fi at home, but it does when I’m on the Wi-Fi at work. I don’t get it. Obviously, it’s been frustrating on our end. I’ve been working with Esther’s partner, who works in the field, and we’ve been making progress. It would help if I, y’know, knew how this stuff works.
Part of the problem is that the old feed is built on an ancient foundation. I set up an RSS feed in 2007, following the instructions I found in Podcasting for Dummies. What an RSS feed needed to be in the nascent days of podcasting pales in comparison to how the medium grew. Even a few years later, when Perram started handling the technical side of the network, he commented on how outdated the feed was. It doesn’t help that I have zero memory of what I did to set the feed up in the first place.
Unfortunately, as I understand it, we can’t just transfer to a new feed. That would mean giving up all of our subscribers, and all of the Internet gods goodwill we’ve built up over the years. We need to fix it. So, we move forward, me trying to answer technical questions to the best of my ability while much more savvy people try to dumb down how they phrase their questions.
Sorry for the inconvenience, folks, and thank you for your patience. If it helps, you can always download our content directly off the website. If you don’t have our release schedule memorized, you can check out the latest Now You Know for that week’s schedule.
Speaking of Know Direction Network content, here’s what we released last week.
