Guidance – Alex’s Top 10: Ways to Build Suspense

Welcome to Guidance, Private Sanctuary’s source for tips and techniques for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, written by Everyman Gamer Alexander Augunas. Today, Alex is going to be sharing the best ways to build suspense for your players in your home game.

Suspense. Arguably, it undercuts all horror as we know it. It is the foundation of drama, that unnerving feeling that pulls us deeper and deeper into a story until we’re just positively ACHING to know what’s going to happen, how are things going to turn out? It is among the hardest emotions to instill into players, and today we’re going to be looking at the Top 10 best ways to build suspense during your roleplaying games.

Alexander “Alex” Augunas has been playing roleplaying games since 2007, which isn’t nearly as long as 90% of his colleagues. Alexander is an active freelancer for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and is best known as the author of the Pact Magic Unbound series by Radiance House. Alex is the owner of Everyman Gaming, LLC and is often stylized as the Everyman Gamer in honor of Guidance’s original home. Alex also cohosts the Private Sanctuary Podcast, along with fellow blogger Anthony Li, and you can follow their exploits on Facebook in the 3.5 Private Sanctuary Group, or on Alex’s Twitter, @AlJAug.
